The Peaceful Soul:

Many of you may not know that RIDE's 4th programming site was in development near Chatfield...called The Peaceful Soul.  Jo Ann Stahl, her  husband and granddaughters were passionate about making a welcoming place, filled with nature, farm life and of course horses where others could enjoy the scenery, relax and heal.  I say were, because on Saturday, March 12 2009  Jo Ann, her husband and 2 granddaughters were in an auto accident, which took the life of 3 out of four traveling.  Only Jennifer, the youngest granddaughter survived. Jo Ann was active in her community, and with her family.  She was a leader, and yet a peaceful soul.  The Volunteers of RIDE join me in dedicating this page to the Stahl Family....and those horses and humans close to us who have left RIDE for a better place.

This aged gelding was very thin, and did not get help soon enough to survive.  He passed away shortly after his call for help came to RIDE.  Older horses like ACE do not need to die thin and weak if they are properly vetted and fed.  Float the teeth on your older horse.  Don't make feeding time a fight for survival with younger more nimble animals, and give him extra calories if needed.

Abe was found in autumn in a beautiful pasture full of grass he could not chew...slowly starving to death.  RIDE volunteers gave him some senior and hay cubes, then found him a loving home that would continue special feedings.  ABE loved children, and after one month looked much better.  By spring, he was able to give his all to the children who took lessons at the stable that gave him a home.  By summer, ABE was the best lesson horse in the barn...the old boy new his stuff!  Lightly ridden and well cared for, ABE had a wonderful end of life.  He died peacefully, 16 months after he was saved.  All older horses should have such happy final days....
